ChatGPT Ads and Advertising in AI Agents: Who Sells Them and How Big the Market Is
By October 2026 ChatGPT, Google, Microsoft Copilot and Amazon sell ads inside AI assistants; Perplexity is winding down its ad program and Anthropic says Claude stays ad-free. ChatGPT ads passed a $1 billion annualized run rate within seven months of launch. Most AI ad spend still runs next to AI answers, not inside them, and agents are starting to buy media through APIs and open protocols.

As of October 2026, four large companies sell ads inside AI assistants: OpenAI in ChatGPT, Google in AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft in Copilot and Amazon in its shopping assistant Rufus, now Alexa for Shopping. Perplexity, an early mover, is winding its ads down. ChatGPT ads, tested from 9 February 2026, passed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate by 31 August, and by 21 October more than 100,000 advertisers had used the platform, now available in 89 countries.
This guide covers how AI assistants are monetized with ads: who sells the inventory, how ChatGPT ads are bought, targeted and priced, how big the market may get, which startups build around it and how agents are starting to buy media. We checked every figure on 21 October 2026 and give its source and date. Treat them as a snapshot.
Which AI assistants show ads?
The table covers every major assistant we checked, including those that sell no ads.
| Assistant | Ads since | Where ads appear | How advertisers buy | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Test from February 2026, self-serve from May 2026 | A sponsored unit below the response, plus product-feed ads; Free and Go tiers only | ChatGPT Ads Manager, OpenAI direct sales, partners such as StackAdapt and Criteo | Live in 89 countries (beta) |
| Google AI Overviews | October 2024 (US mobile) | Text and Shopping ads inside the overview, in English, in 12 countries | Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns | Live |
| Google AI Mode | Test from May 2025 | Ads below and inside answers, new formats in testing | AI Max for Search, Performance Max | Test |
| Microsoft Copilot | 2023 | Search, shopping and multimedia ads in answers | Microsoft Advertising | Live |
| Amazon (Rufus, now Alexa for Shopping) | General availability March 2026 (US) | Sponsored prompts in shopping results and on product pages | Amazon Ads; existing Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands campaigns opted in automatically; CPC | Live in the US |
| Perplexity | November 2024 | Sponsored follow-up questions | Stopped taking new advertisers in October 2025 | Winding down |
| Meta AI | None inside the assistant | Meta said chats with Meta AI would be used to target ads in its other apps from 16 December 2025 | Not applicable | No ads in the assistant |
| Grok | Announced August 2025 | Elon Musk said ads would appear in Grok's answers | No launch found | Announced |
| Claude | None | Anthropic said in February 2026 that Claude will remain ad-free | Not applicable | No ads |
Google and Microsoft treat AI answers as another placement for existing campaigns. Advertisers can't opt out of ads in AI Overviews or in Copilot, and neither platform breaks those placements out in reporting. OpenAI is the only one that sells its AI inventory through a dedicated buying platform.
How do ChatGPT ads work?
Who sees ads in ChatGPT
ChatGPT shows ads to adult users on the Free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions stay ad-free, and OpenAI says ads are not shown to users under 18 or in Temporary Chats. The standard format is a single sponsored unit below the response: advertiser name, favicon, headline, body copy, image and landing page. Shopping-style ads are built from a product feed, and "Sponsored Agents", where users chat with a business's own agent, are in a limited alpha.
How to buy ChatGPT ads
OpenAI sells the inventory as OpenAI Ads. Advertisers buy through the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager, in beta since 5 May 2026, through OpenAI's direct sales team, or through partners. OpenAI names Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt among its technology partners and the holding companies dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP among its agency partners. It also documents an Advertiser API for managing campaigns programmatically.
Targeting starts from the conversation. Advertisers supply context hints, which OpenAI says are not exact-match keywords, and can add custom audiences of at least 25,000 matched users.
How much ChatGPT ads cost
OpenAI suggests starting with a max CPC bid of $3 to $5, and the minimum daily budget in the US is $25. Ads are sold in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, with CPM, CPC or conversion-optimized bidding (oCPM or oCPC). Even optimized campaigns are billed on impressions or clicks: OpenAI says it never bills per conversion.
The often repeated $60 CPM and $250,000 minimum were the terms of the early managed-service pilot. Digiday reported in April 2026 that the CPM had fallen from $60 and the minimum commitment from $250,000 to $50,000. In June, Adweek reported that StackAdapt had dropped its minimum spend for ChatGPT ads entirely and Criteo had cut its own from $50,000 to $10,000. To compare a CPC test in ChatGPT with CPM buys elsewhere, normalize both to eCPM.
What data advertisers get
OpenAI's help center says advertisers never get access to conversations, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise location or IP addresses. Personalized ads are not available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland, and political ads are not allowed.
How big is the AI advertising market?
In the US, ad spend inside AI chatbots will reach $0.96 billion in 2026, and search ads served next to AI summaries $26.42 billion, according to EMARKETER. That gap is why forecasts for "AI advertising" or "LLM advertising" differ by an order of magnitude: some size only in-chat spend, others count every search ad next to an AI answer.
| Metric | Value | Scope | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| US ad spend inside AI chatbots, 2026 | $0.96 billion | Ads in chat interfaces only | EMARKETER, July 2026 |
| US ad spend next to AI search summaries, 2026 | $26.42 billion | Search ads placed beside AI answers | EMARKETER, July 2026 |
| All US AI advertising, 2030 | $68.25 billion | Both of the above | EMARKETER, June 2026 |
| Global generative search ad revenue | $5.1 billion in 2026, over $100 billion in 2030 | Ads in generative search worldwide | WPP Media, June 2026 |
| OpenAI's ad revenue projection | $2.5 billion in 2026, $100 billion in 2030 | OpenAI alone, from investor presentations | Axios, April 2026 |
| ChatGPT ads, reported | $1 billion annualized run rate | OpenAI alone | OpenAI, 31 August 2026 |
EMARKETER expects more than 80% of AI advertising in 2026 to appear next to AI content rather than inside conversations, and it estimates that OpenAI's US ad revenue will fall roughly 90% short of the company's 2030 target. The often quoted forecast of $1.3 trillion in "AI-enabled" ad revenue by 2032, made by GroupM (now WPP Media) in 2022, belongs to a different category: it counts any advertising that uses AI anywhere in the process, which by 2032 means more than 90% of all ad revenue.
Google does not break out revenue from ads in AI answers. On its third-quarter 2025 earnings call, Alphabet said AI Overviews monetize "at approximately the same rate" as regular search results. In July 2026 it said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly active users. OpenAI says ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly active users, a self-reported figure.
What do users think of ads in AI assistants?
A Statista survey of US users of large language models, fielded in June 2026, gives a first read on ad tolerance. The sample size is not public.
- 21.5% said ads inside AI assistants are acceptable if the tool stays free.
- 17.7% said ads make assistants feel less trustworthy.
- If their preferred assistant introduced ads, 36% would keep using the free version with ads, 22.4% would pay for an ad-free version and 17.9% would switch to an ad-free assistant.
Trust is also the reason Perplexity gave for winding down its ads, the sponsored follow-up questions it had sold since November 2024. According to the Financial Times, as reported by B&T in February 2026, the company concluded that ads made users suspicious of its answers.
Which startups build ads for AI?
Outside the big platforms, a handful of venture-backed startups monetize third-party LLM apps with ads, usually through an SDK that the app developer integrates, much as a website owner plugs in an ad network.
| Company | What it does | Latest funding | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koah | Sponsored messages inside AI chat apps through an SDK | $20.5 million Series A, February 2026, led by Theory Ventures | Active |
| Gravity | Ad network for AI with its own DSP, SSP and exchange; testing ads for shopping agents | $30.5 million Series A, August 2026, co-led by Lightspeed and Committed Capital | Active |
| Kontext | Contextual ads generated inside chatbot answers | $10 million seed, August 2025, led by M13 | Active |
| AdZen | Native ads inside AI chatbots and on publisher sites | Seed, February 2026, amount not disclosed | Active |
| ProRata (Gist) | AI answer engine for publishers, monetized with ads on a 50% revenue share | $40 million Series B, September 2025, led by Touring Capital | Active |
| ZeroClick | Launched in August 2025 as an ad network for AI | $55 million at launch, August 2025 | Launched a platform for selling to agents in July 2026 |
| Nexad | In-chat ad platform | $6 million seed, April 2025 | Now builds Soku AI, an agent that runs ads on Google, Meta, TikTok and ChatGPT |
Two of the early in-chat ad networks have since pivoted toward agents: ZeroClick less than a year after launch, and Nexad, which now builds an agent that buys ads. That suggests founders see more money in agents that shop and buy than in ads placed in front of people.
Next to them sits a larger, better-funded category that sells no ads at all: AI visibility tools that track how assistants describe and recommend brands, usually sold as answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO). Profound raised $180 million at a $1.8 billion valuation in September 2026, Bluefish raised $43 million in April 2026 and Brandlight $30 million in February 2026, while Sitecore acquired Scrunch in June 2026. Dealroom counts $472 million raised by seven such startups founded since 2024.
What Y Combinator is funding
Y Combinator's public directory shows where early-stage founders are heading. Among its companies we found two ad networks for AI products, about a dozen AI agents that run paid media, and more than a dozen AEO and GEO tools. The Spring 2026 batch has the most of them.
| Company | Batch | What it does | Funding beyond YC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imprezia | Summer 2025 | Ad network and SDK for AI apps and chatbots: brands pay for contextual mentions in AI answers, developers are paid per impression or click | Not confirmed |
| Freebuff | Fall 2024 | Ad-supported free coding agent: developer-tool brands buy sponsored text ads in its chat panel on CPC, with a $50 daily minimum | Not confirmed |
| Lapis | Fall 2025 | Self-serve and managed ad engine; its ChatSense product buys sponsored placements in ChatGPT, next to Google, Meta, Reddit and LinkedIn | Not confirmed |
| Adside.ai | Fall 2026 | AI agents that manage paid media on Google, Meta, LinkedIn, Reddit and X, from $990 per brand a month | Not confirmed |
| Uplane | Fall 2025 | Replaces the agency: generates ads and landing pages and reallocates budget across Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn | $4.5 million seed, April 2026, led by Play Ventures |
| The Prompting Company | Summer 2025 | Gets products mentioned and recommended by ChatGPT and other agents | $6.5 million seed, October 2025 |
| AthenaHQ | Winter 2025 | Tracks and improves how brands appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini | $2.2 million, 2025 |
| Armature, Scope | Spring 2026 | Measure whether coding agents such as Claude Code and Cursor pick a developer tool | Not confirmed |
Most of the media-buying agent companies pitch the same thing, an agency replacement, and several keep a human in the loop to approve changes. AI visibility is moving from chat answers to coding agents: startups now help developer-tool companies get picked by Claude Code or Cursor. None of the YC companies we checked mentions AdCP; several expose an MCP server instead.
What is agentic advertising?
Agentic advertising is media buying run by AI agents: software that plans, buys and optimizes campaigns for an advertiser, with a human approving the brief rather than every line item.
The main open standard is the Ad Context Protocol (AdCP), launched on 15 October 2025 by Yahoo, Optable, PubMatic, Scope3, Swivel and Triton Digital. It is built on the Model Context Protocol and lets buyer and seller agents discover inventory, plan, buy and measure media. Version 3.2 is generally available, and the standard is governed by a nonprofit, AgenticAdvertising.org. IAB Tech Lab works on the same problem from the RTB side. Its Agentic Real Time Framework (ARTF), which runs containerized agents inside bidding platforms to modify the bidstream, reached version 1.0 in 2026, and its OpenProposal draft for agent-to-agent deal proposals was open for public comment until 22 October 2026. Our DSP and SSP explainer covers the auction these agents plug into.
The major ad platforms opened their APIs to agents through MCP servers in 2026:
- Amazon put its Ads MCP server, which can create, update and delete campaigns, into open beta in February.
- Meta opened its ads MCP server to any developer in July.
- X launched an Ads MCP server in August.
- Microsoft Advertising and the Google Ads API offer read-only MCP access.
Ad tech vendors moved too. On the sell side, PubMatic reported 30 live end-to-end agentic campaigns on its AgenticOS by April, and Magnite built a seller agent into SpringServe; on the buy side, Yahoo DSP opened to outside agents via MCP.
Volumes are still small. When Scope3 renamed itself Apostra in September 2026 to focus on agent-to-agent trading, PPC Land reported about $1.2 million in agentic buys and a staff cut from more than 100 people to about 40.
How big is the AI agents market?
Advertising is a small slice of a wider AI agents market that analysts struggle to size. Gartner expects 40% of enterprise applications to include task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025, and forecasts spending on AI agents and assistants of $29.2 billion in 2026 and $65.5 billion in 2027. It also predicts that more than 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027.
Paid market research reports put the 2025 market at roughly $7 to $8 billion and then diverge: MarketsandMarkets projects $52.6 billion by 2030, Precedence Research $294.7 billion by 2035. Their methods are undisclosed and their definitions of an agent differ, so read them as an order of magnitude rather than a market size.
Our view
This section is Youtarget's opinion, not reporting.
For most advertisers, AI advertising in 2026 is search advertising in a new placement. Spend comes out of existing search budgets, and Google and Microsoft fold AI placements into campaigns advertisers already run, with no opt-out and no separate reporting. In practice, advertisers get less control and transparency rather than a new channel.
ChatGPT is the exception, and it is being built like a classic ad platform: an auction, CPM and CPC bidding, a self-serve ad manager, an API and DSP partners that give buyers programmatic access. Once AI inventory flows through the same programmatic pipes as open-web inventory, it will be priced like it. More demand will reach the same impressions through intermediaries and CPMs will settle at market levels, as the fall from the $60 launch CPM already shows.
Agents will buy media through APIs before they buy through new protocols. The first agent budgets are going where an agent can already create a campaign, set a bid and pull reporting, which is why Amazon, Meta and X opened MCP servers. AdCP and IAB Tech Lab's frameworks matter for the long run, but the reported volumes are still in the low millions. For an ad network, being ready for agents is unglamorous work: a full-featured API, predictable pricing and machine-readable traffic data. Youtarget's ad network API already lets software create campaigns, upload creatives and pull stats without touching the UI.
If you advertise, the cheapest step today is a small ChatGPT test: the minimum daily budget in the US is $25. Compare it with your other channels on eCPM and CPA, and read your Google and Microsoft reports knowing that AI placements are already mixed in, without a separate breakdown.

Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT have ads?
Yes. OpenAI started testing ads on 9 February 2026 and by 21 October 2026 had made them available in 89 countries. Ads appear only on the Free and Go tiers; Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free.
Why does ChatGPT have ads now?
OpenAI presents ads as the way to pay for free access: it announced them in January 2026 in a post about advertising and expanding access to AI. Investor presentations reported by Axios project ad revenue of $2.5 billion in 2026 and $100 billion in 2030.
How do I stop seeing ads in ChatGPT?
Ads are shown only on the Free and Go tiers, so a Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise subscription removes them. OpenAI also says Temporary Chats carry no ads. Turning off ad personalization doesn't remove ads; they are then based only on the current conversation.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
OpenAI suggests starting with a max CPC bid of $3 to $5, and the minimum daily budget in the US is $25. Ads are billed on impressions or clicks, never per conversion. Early managed deals were priced at about $60 CPM; prices have fallen since.
Which AI assistants don't show ads?
Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free, and Perplexity stopped taking new advertisers in October 2025. Meta AI shows no ads inside the assistant, but Meta said it would use those chats to target ads in its other apps from December 2025.
How big is the AI advertising market?
It depends on what is counted. EMARKETER puts US ad spend inside chatbots at $0.96 billion in 2026 and spend next to AI search summaries at $26.42 billion. WPP Media expects global generative search ad revenue to grow from $5.1 billion in 2026 to more than $100 billion in 2030.
Can AI agents buy ads?
Yes, through the APIs and MCP servers that Amazon, Meta and X opened in 2026, and through the open Ad Context Protocol. Reported volumes are still small: PPC Land put agentic buys through Apostra, formerly Scope3 and one of the AdCP founders, at about $1.2 million in September 2026.
